GARAGE DOOR SPRING REPLACEMENT
How To Identify a Garage Door Torsion Spring:
Caution for identifying purposes only:
- Do not touch the set screws on the spring winding cone.
- Do not touch the nuts or bolts that secure the stationary cone to the spring stationary bracket.
- Do not hold the torsion spring.
The garage door springs are under extreme pressure, and it is highly recommended only to have a professional do the work.
Step 1 – Measure the overall length of the spring coil to coil. Do not count cones.
Step 2 – Measure the length of 20 coils to give you the wire size.
Step 3 – Measure the inside diameter.
Step 4 – Determine if it is a left or right hand wound. spring. Image above is a right hand wound.
With the 20-coil measurement you can determine the wire size from the chart above.
Note that the measurements are not exact, but rounded to the nearest 16th of an inch. For example, 20 coils of .177 wire will measure to be 3 1/2″ to the nearest 16th of an inch, but not exactly 3 1/2″.
With garage door springs, it’s very important to take your time and measure properly.

Advantages of Using Torsion Spring vs. Extension Spring:
If your garage door seems to be getting heavier manually, it is sure that the springs are losing their torque. Never try disconnecting a garage door in the up position if a garage door opener is attached. If you feel the spring is broken or losing its torque, it can come crashing down. Please make sure the doors are in the down position and try lifting them manually. You shouldn’t have to raise more than 10 pounds because the springs, if proper for the door, will counterbalance the weight. A garage door is a complicated mechanism, and unless you know what you’re doing, we highly advise you not to work on it; leave it to the experts. Standard springs give you approximately ten years, but you can get heavy-duty ones to last 2 to 3 times longer for an upcharge. Our Springs are made of the highest quality spring steel to give you years of trouble-free operation.
